    Van,

There are no problems flying down a Sun line to an island when all the pre-calculations use the island as the assumed position. The course is corrected after each observation to stay on track. The first pilot to use this method in an aircraft over water was Sir Francis Chichester while island hopping from New Zealand to Australia.

I never saw documentation on his work for PanAM , it is reasonable that for long offsets and inbounds he checked by celnav ; he does not mention it in the interview by Mantz but the fashion was possibly / probably used in the roads of Howland . When flying along a slightly erroneous sun line however , the celnav checks were ineffective since the observed sun´s elevations figured very close to the elevations on the true over Howland line , given the high aircraft´s velocity and the high westwards speed of the subsolar point .
