    Moonrise at Mystic Seaport
    From: Frank Reed
    Date: 2013 Jan 31, 16:39 -0800

Here's a fun challenge. See if you can figure out the photographer's location and the time of the photo as nearly as possible. The photo was taken from near Mystic Seaport last Saturday, January 26, when the Full Moon was rising not long after sunset (and posted to Mystic Seaport's FB page). Even if you haven't ever been to Mystic, you can work this out. One important piece of information: the three-masted vessel in the foreground is the Joseph Conrad. Behind it is the two-masted schooner L.A. Dunton. Their masts overlap. You can find the Conrad via Google Maps or similar at latitude 41.36197 N and longitude 71.96628 W. You can get a rough estimate of the altitude of the Moon using a technique that Ken Gebhart has described previously with respect to the Sun: the Moon is slightly flattened by refraction and that degree of flattening determines its altitude. Or you could try to guess where the horizon is. You could also attempt to determine the Moon's azimuth from alignments in foreground objects.
