The Moon is in distance with the Sun

This expression, "the Moon is in distance with the Sun", striked me as a peculiar choice of words, but I've seen it in two completely different places. Many will recognize it as (nearly) what Joshua Slocum wrote when describing shooting a lunar while "Sailing Along Around the World" a little over a hundred years ago. I've also come across it in a logbook from 1823. Does anyone know if it meant something specific? Has anyone seen it in print elsewhere?
