As I said in a previous post I taught myself the basics of celestial nav when living inland sme 20 years or so ago. My intentions were to use the knowledge eventually but by the time I moved to the coast and bought a yacht GPS was it.

In my time associated with the fishing and yachting fraternity I have not met anybody who utilised celestial nav. I feel I am seen by some as one who meddles in the black arts, a druid mumbling to himself whilst handling  mysterious objects, worshiping the sun and carrying undecipherable books of numbers under his arms.

If I start to talk to boating associates about celestial nav their eyes glaze over, they shuffle their feet and it is obvious they wish to depart from my presence.

Over time I have learned to keep my own counsel on such matters and now wear a baseball cap with Garmin on it so as to find acceptance amongst my fellows.

Leprosy can be cured but celestial nav, once caught, is an incurable disease and a cross us so afflicted have to bear with as much fortitude as we can muster.
