The Uniden Atlantis 250 shown in the previous post is a very good value for a water resistant model that has 5 watts of power and several battery options (rechargeable, alkaline, or cigarette lighter plug). The rechargeable batteries will last three days on a charge if just receiving. The alkaline pack should last longer. 5 watts of power will transmit reliably on line of sight to a 5 mile horizon and should be receivable by a ships antenna out to 12 miles. I keep an extra rechargeable and alkaline pack handy to back-up the 25 watt primary VHF when sailing.
