back to subs after teaching at Officers Candidate School Newport for near 5 years than 5 years on the Intrepid CVS?CVA. Then to Squadons 2 & 10, not missile subs. I am sure that the Missile Subs are still out there and better equiped than I knew. I can not anwer much of you questions, but may a few, Special schools at Dam Neck VA. were on the SINS and other underwater techiques of positioning. Even the names of the techique were top secrect. The ETS were electronic technitions that maintained the SINS and Type 11. They did operate the gear also, but normally did not navigation.
They(ETS) in most cases, would follow the gear on to the beach. The Navy today is trying to join the rates together,I hope they don't. SINS is inertial. The 3 SINS runing like three time pieces, if one were to part from the others you knew which one was off. We did have a way to find our position very accurately to continuios monitor the 3 system and to correct the the
input for the missiles,but that would TS. As I left, I heard that they would install a "star in a Box"
I know nothing about that. The idea with the Missile sub was to have a gun pointed at the head of the target (country) They would not know where or what direction, so could not stop this deterrent, county, from hitting US. If that country could find one of us, They could claim that they know how to find others,and that is the idea of the cold war, they could not find the sub. Yes I was one of the 2 that used special unnamed navigation. That don't mean that the other subs had use only two, But to keep the number down of people is to keep safe, Would they love to get one, it would stop the cold war and may start hot. When we surface to come to Holy Lock we were alway right on position.
Scar gear was a gyro in the periscope ,like a bubble sextant that could be used at periscope dept to get a celestial fix. I may have more on it later. It would be
bad for us to break the surface while on patrol. This is not complete, but it can't be. I don't know what the rules are now. I got out in 78.
