The average patrol was 2.5 months. The navigation was pure on
board equipment. We never surfaced and every one was looking for us
in one way or another. If we were detected in any way the reason we were out there would be void. The purpose was to make sure that one one attacted the US.
My way of thinking was " that, is a gun pointing at your head. If you attacted
the USA, The invisable gun will shot. You can not see or find the gun.
the invisable gun will not hurt you. We had good equipment and could run silently away from any one or thing looking for us. We would be in a large
area and hid from any thing or craft that we detected. No one on the beach
even the president knew were we were. Even the peoper on board had a knowlege
of location. If someone on board came near me, I would hid the chart so that they, would have no idea of where we were. As long as we are in good water.
3 SINS would be compare together, and we had ways to check their accuracy.
On the SSBN 602 Lincoln two, Myself and another, ran the Navigation There was no need for anyone to know where we were or went. here were no reason for any else to know, Every thing was top secrect,How, what when and where.
That was many years ago 196tys I don't see how but am sure they are better now.
