Could you drill a couple of *small* holes near the top and bottom
corners and sides of the plates without upsetting the apple cart?

Perhaps fooling myself, but I cut and mounted dull black plastic (from a
notebook cover) on the bottom inside of my Davis AH tray and it seems to
help a bit with star sights using water as the liquid. Note that
glycerine is water soluble for easy cleanup, and should increase surface
tension if memory serves (hence its use in bubble-blowing solutions.)

The real secret is to keep the AH in the shade while doing sun
    observations :-)
