I hesitate to "revisit" the mirror AH again but my results have been good and others may benefit. Just use a metal plate with screws in a "T" and a sensitive spirit level. My intercepts are usually under 2 miles and often just a few tenths of a mile. These folks can sell you a level vial of 10-20 seconds of arc sensitivity for $50 and all you have to do is add a stable set of feet to it.

They are in the UK and "carriage" was $20 when last I wrote them.
There are earlier postings telling how you can make your own level but it's probably cheaper just to buy one. You just need one.
