The metric kamal assignment for this evening was to observe Canopus at meridian passage. Fortunately Canopus is a bright star and was visible to the naked eye very low in the sky through a light haze at the end of civil twilight. Reading the kamal was quite a trick. I used my thumb nail to mark the scale and then interpolated the minutes of arc by eye. A good LED flashlight was most helpful.

The first complete trial of the Metric Kamal has been completed with good result under perfect conditions at the beach from a height of eye of 5 ft. A 22" dowel was used in place of a tape measure. This frees up a hand (see attached image). Intercepts from GPS  for 9° to 1° were all under 8' while above 9° were over 10'. Not too bad for a CN tool that took less than 30 minutes to make.
