Re sun shots, you mnigt try the following. I assume that you can determine GPS coordinates, at the coast.
Shoot the sun in the AM, say around 10. Shoot the sun in the PM, try it at about 1400, 4 hours later.
Reduce the shots, and plot the lop's having plotted your known position (GPS coordinates) and see how things come out. If your "calculated fix" falls within 5 NM of GPS coordinatres, your shots and plotting are fine.
