We chased spilled mercury around the floor. Along with mercury, we habitually, and still do, inhaled fumes from melted lead solder and flux and of course, inhaled our share of 'airplane cement'. We washed bicycle chains in leaded gasoline.

I had a similar childhood. I obtained my mercury from 9v batteries. After cutting open the outer case, I would squeeze the interior button cells with pliers until they ruptured, and collected the mercury that leaked out.
