    Re: Merchant Marine In German Is Handlesmarine?

    That web dictionary echoes my comments on the changes in German spelling. Nice to see that the web reflects those changes that may go unnoticed otherwise.

    Betreff: Re: AW: MERCHANT MARINE IN GERMAN IS HANDLESMARINE?

    Hello,

    I've come up with a slightly different answer using a web German-English dictionary.  I suspect the appropriate maritime useage is as Wolfgang and Henry reported.

    Deutsch

    English

    1 Ergebnis für merchant shipping

    1 result for merchant shipping

    Handelsschifffahrt {f}; Handelsschiffahrt {f} [alt]

    merchant shipping

    Deutsch

    English

    1 Ergebnis für merchant marine

    1 result for merchant marine

    Handelsmarine {f}; Marine {f}

    merchant navy; merchant marine

    The dictionary is at

    This does not answer the meaning of Deutsche Seefahrt imprinted on a sextant certificate.
