Brad and Frank, Also consider the following: how do you think these dip tables of XVI century were made, if not with some sort of cross-staff or backstaff? Or could they simply buy a theodolite for these purposes? I don't know about Harriot, but Copernicus few decades before made his wooden instrument himself, following Ptolemy description. I have Prolemy description in front of me, and this instrument seems to be inferior to a backstaff. Alex.
