I suppose the principle is somewhat similar to that of the optical micrometer, which is used in many optical measuring devices to displace rays without bending them. I have attached a couple of pages from Habell, J K and Cox, A. Engineering Optics. London, 1953. These explain the principle.
(I am not an expert in optics either...)
