Dear Trevor, thank you very much for your accurate explanation and for your references. Once again crop up titles that shoud be read. When will I find tranquility? Please allow two more questions: what a relation was between the ranks post-captain and commander? When the post-captain disappeared from the Royal Navy? Maybe my memory fails, but I don't remember that a master was present in Forester's stories, at least during Hornblower's early service times. For what ship category the master began to be appointed?
