I recommend that all persons interested in celestial navigation, the problem of longitude, and related astronomical matters, read "Maskelyne, Astronomer Royal," edited by Rebekah Higgitt, published by the National Maritime Museum at Greenwich in 2014, and available in the U.S. since February 2015.

This book consists of a series of articles and related case studies. It places the longitude problem -- especially the alleged Harrison-Maskelyne dispute -- into a broader, more balanced context. It also sheds light on the pursuit of science in the late 18th and early 19th centuries.

A well-documented, fascinating read for a snowy winter weekend.
