I hate astronauts. Not as people, but as huge consumers of scarce money. They haven't done anything nearly as scientifically rewarding as our robots have. And they need a lot of sandwiches to survive. I was manager of a mission to be launched on the shuttle, and I was shocked when the mission plan had to be interrupted so the damn astronauts could sleep. We don't have problems like that with robots. But I did get to understand their allure when I attended a press conference at the cape for my last mission, Mariner 10 to Venus and Mercury. I asked a Reuters correspondent if he had any interest in our mission, and he said no. I asked why, and he replied, "No man." Publicity is the name of the game and robots aren't as popular as people.
