    Greg,

You are only the second of two people who have recommended # 3.  This is a bit off topic but many years ago, I was agonizing over a mysterious side error that kept creeping into my sextant. I was certain that there was some defect involved and sent it to a instrument man by the name of Frank Janicek who was the owner of Maryland Precision Instruments. He was probably one of the best sextant repair men in existence. In any event, Frank advised me that in fact having a little side error in the sextant is a good thing for the very reason you point out in your suggestion # 3.

Frank passed away quite a few years ago but I never forgot his advice to me on this matter.

    Alan,

To confirm your index error readings try using Jupiter this evening. (Azimuth 227*, Alt. 41* at 1800 LMT)

    1. Set the index arm and micrometer drum to zero with all shades removed.

    2. Focus the scope on Jupiter (infinity)

    3. Put in just a touch of side error using the adjustment wrench so that two separate images of Jupiter are seen side by side.

    4. Average 10 or more index observations aligning the Jupiter images horizontally side by side.

Sirius would be good for this as well (Azimuth 118*, Alt. 8* at 1800 LMT)
