    I would think that the glass from a welding eye shield would serve, as a welding arc is terribly bright.

    Seems to me that the lighting gels I purchased will work too., I took the plastic shields with me and asked for gels at least that dark.

    Greg Rudinski was kind enough to send me a couple of small pieces of grey film. I cut them to fit over the objective lenses of my sextant telescopes, and they seem to work well too.

    By the way, in conjunction with the lighting gel,I also used the sun shields on my Astra III B sextant.
