Lars,
As Marcel suggested the NOAA online variation calculator works good from 1900 so to get 1897 just work backwards from 1900 using the annual rate of change in reverse. In the year 1900 for 80N 33E the variation is 3* 37' E with an annual change of 3' E. Going back to 1897 apply the change in a west direction and get 3* 28' E for year 1897.
