    Lars,

I presume that you have read the fictitious account of SA Andree's trip to the Pole, entitled "Flight of the Eagle" by Per Olof Sundman?

It has been 15 years since I read that book but I do remember that I thoroughly enjoyed it. At the same time I was horrified by the awful deaths that Andre and his crew must have suffered as (according to Dr. EA Tryde) hundreds of millions of trichinae invaded their bodies causing fever, cramps, diarrhoea (bad enough to contend with in a warm house, try it outside at minus 20C) stomach and muscle pains, boils and rashes.

It is believed that Andree and his crew contracted trichinosis from the infected polar bear meat that they ate over 20 meals. A very gruesome death.

    Robert

"You must be doing some research on the 1897 attempt by S.A. Andree to balloon over the North Pole. I did not know of this history and find it interesting that in 1930 he and his team were finally found along with some undeveloped film that documented the flight."

Yes, that's correct! I am trying to work through the navigation log kept by Nils Strindberg, which was found in the camp in 1930. I have access to photos of the pages taken a few years ago. They are very difficult to read in some places. In 1930 a thourough analysis of the navigation log was made and a map drawn of the expedition's track, during the balloon flight and during the ice walk. As far as I have been able to find out, only a popular article of the results have been published. Back then the log was much easier to read and I have been searching in vain for the photos of the log pages that were taken at that time.

On 14 July 1897 Andrée and his two companions were forced to go down with the ballon in the neighbourhood of 83N 30E. Then they walked southwards. On 19 and 22 August Strindberg took two sets of lunars to check his chronometers. On 19 September he took compass bearings of Kvitøya (White Island) together with a time sight of the sun. Knowing the magnetic variation and today's coordinates of the island (in 1930 the coordinates were inaccurately known), I will be able to find the chronometer error and rate.

Many thanks to Marcel and you for your assistance.
