    In the French nautical language, variation is the sum of declination en deviation.
    W = D + d.

    Declination, in French d?clinaison, is the angle between true North and the
    direction of the horizontal magnetic field.
    deviation, in French d?viation, is the angle between the compass needle and
    the horizontal magnetic field.
    the vertical magnetic field is called inclinaison.
    French Navy officers in NATO operations use the English terminology.
    It was just a detail.
