    Re: MHR1 reproduction

    Dear Dave and Robin,
thank you very much for your respective messages.
I had a look at the FORTRAN code that Dave kindly
shared with the list- unfortunately my FORTRAN is not
at all fluent and my understanding of the whole thing,
well, only partly...(I am rather a programming dummy)

Both your programs produce wonderful scales! Especially
the reverse numbering in Robin's POSTSCRIPT is
    brilliant.

When making the reproduction I noticed that the tube
diametres are within their specifications but vary
    slightly.

What I am dreaming of is a program to produce an
individual set of scales for two individually
    specified diametres. (logarithmic divisions matching
by the arcs on both diametres)
Maybe even pitch could be made a variable to perfectly
    match the tube lengths.
The final, though least important, point on my wishlist
would be a way to individually set the font... (to
come closest to the original, most likely Futura...)
I suppose these are lots of ideas that are hard to
    implement.

I have successfully compiled and run the FORTRAN code.
(Which is designed to produce "flat bygrave" scales)
And I think with some hints I could edit tube
    diametres/circumferences/pitch/font setting directly
in any POSTCRIPT or FORTRAN code.

I would be grateful for any help and ideas on how to
best produce the helical scales needed to finish the
    reproduction!

    best regards
    Wolfgang
