    John,

In regards to your student teams over exposed Moon images. In lieu of filtering the Moon try taking a properly exposed image of the moon then compare to the over exposed Moon in the digital Regulus lunar. Hopefully the camera settings were saved and recorded. There should be a measurable difference of image augmentation as the result of over exposure. This difference in pixels can be added to near limb lunars or subtracted from far limb lunars. It may be possible to do a retro adjustment to get better than the 5 degrees of longitude photographed by the student team.

Renting a professional digital camera, fixed lens, and filters (split five ways) would be a cost effective way for the team to do better. It is necessary to calibrate the lens (should be of fixed focal length) for the anticipated lunar distance to be photographed. A single measurement between a star pair will not be good enough unless it happens to be the same angular measurement as the measured lunar distance (which is not likely).

    Greg Rudzinski
