A suggestion for beginners thinking about lunars... There's a lot of talk about various methods of clearing lunars and their relative merits and it can all be a little intimidating. Don't let it get to you! Lunars are easy. I refer you to the wise words of John...
John was the black cook aboard Nathaniel Bowditch's vessel, Cleopatra's Barge. Everyone on Bowditch's crew became a lunarian. When quizzed by an incredulous European visitor about his prefered method for clearing lunars, John supposedly replied:
"It is immaterial. I use sometimes the method of Maskelyne, Lyons, or Bowditch, but I prefer that of Dunthorne, as I am more accustomed to it".
(quoted from "Yankee Stargazer: the Life of Nathaniel Bowditch" by R.E. Berry, 1941)
