Greg,
"lucky great". I agree. And I also agree that one should expect typical errors of several minutes of arc with Davis sextants (roughly s.d.=2 minutes of arc). I've never had one that did better than that. But who knows... maybe some minor change in the properties of the plastic they mold them from could suddenly yield a more stable instrument. I haven't tried a new one in ten years.
