    Frank Reed wrote-

"But pocket watches were widely available, at least to ships' officers,
even at the beginning of the EIGHTEENTH century. By the 19th century, they
were so common that it wasn't even necessary to refer to them. Watches were
    ubiquitous."

Did Frank intend those words to be taken literally? If he did, I wonder if
    he can provide some examples.

The only possibility I can think of is Halley, who as a professional
astronomer and clerk to the Royal Society, might conceivably have acquired
one from Hooke for his voyages in 1698 to 1701. Who were the others, at that
    date?

    George.
