Just a note to add to Jan Kalivoda's interesting mailing, in which he said-

    >Dunthorne's (1711 - 1775) method, very popular in Germany and Scandinavia,
    >was published >by Maskelyne in the Nautical Almanac for 1772 (according to
    >Cotter).

Dunthorne's method was published in the 1766 (first) edition of Maskelyne's
"Tables Requisite", which was often bound together with the very first
issue of the Nautical Almanac (for 1767). The 1772 date is for an
"improved" version of Dunthorne's method, which I don't know.

    George Huxtable.
