    Lunar distance methods, Shadwell, 1881

My 2010 message on Admiral Sir Charles Shadwell

did not mention another online publication which may be of interest:
"Notes on the Reduction of Lunar Observations," 1881. Shadwell discusses
the theory of the lunar distance method for finding time, and compares
the major methods for reducing the observations.

Many footnotes refer to his "Notes on Nautical Astronomy". However, W.R.
Martin, in the preface to his own text on navigation and nautical
astronomy (3rd edition, 1899), says Shadwell never published that work,
"a matter of regret to all students".

Another matter of regret is the Google scan, which is OK for the text
but not sharp enough for easy reading of subscripts and superscrpts in
the formulas. Unfortunately, this is common in mathematical material in
Google books. Often a superior Microsoft scan can be found at
archive.org, but in this case we are out of luck. The bungled table of
contents, not hyperlinked properly, is another common Google-ism.
Nevertheless, some may find the book interesting.
