    Jump to 8:29 to see description of beam width and signaling range.  The video is slightly disingenuous when it discusses the range for airborne rescuers, indicating 300 square miles.  As the area of a circle is pi*r^2 =300 sq mi, the r is only 9.77 miles.  I think this was for morale of those bobbing about, thinking of rescue. "They can see us, remember what they said?!?!"
