Alex,
The camera is good enough to use as a primary navigation tool within field of view limits. For a life boat all that is needed is a Kamal to get within 0.1* accuracy. I have made and tested such a thing that I call a Sunrule. A Bris is good enough for primary navigation and would make a most excellent lifeboat addition. As for the watch...well the one on the wrist should be good enough if it is a quartz that has been checked by time tick. A pub 249 style almanac (one sheet) and a trig calculator (even a slide rule ;-) rounds out the kit. Don't forget the pilot chart for inclusion. Head for the nearest shipping lane then stand by with a flare hoping someone is on the bridge when a ship passes. If in a raft then there is no way to sail so holding position with a sea anchor is the best bet.
