Jeremy , If sunset/rise is precomputed for time & given coordinates it might be enough to set course to the place by rhumb line sailing and @ the given time you observe the sun , superficially if you so wish , to decide you are close to the precomputed coordinates . How this is done (by formulae and by H.O.no.208) is demonstrated in "technical articles" @ davidkbowman.com (3 articles on the Earhart-Noonan 1937 Pacific incident in European Journal of Navigation 2008-2011). H .
