Here is an example showing an american style cloths pin as improvised Kamal. The example altitude is 2.4 solar diameters ( hs 1* 17' ). Tape measure, shoelace, or fishing line will serve as base line.

Orjan,
On your next opportunity try a series of timed cloths peg observations. Place your thumb nail at the horizon and the top of the peg covering the upper limb. Use the other half of the cloths peg to measure the minutes of altitude in 32' increments and an estimated partial increment. Acceptable results should be obtainable up to the 35 mm length of the cloths peg.

it was done more or less at the spur of the moment, so no time for elaborate math, I just held it up and let line out till it covered sun, did some minute adjusting and then rotated 90° and tried to follow upper limb of sun until the peg's lower limb touched horizon.
to put mildly I was somewhat surprised how accurate it was.
I suspect it is unlikely to get such a good result if I repeat the experiment.
I was even more surprised to see the 0' figure of the screen dump, guess I used different numbers in at least one place as I got another figure.
this khamal was not as easy to use as a Bris but still got surprisingly accurate LOP.
