    If I understand your method correctly then you are calibrating the cloths peg to one solar diameter (32'). If the 7mm width is used then the fishing line length is about 750 mm (29 in.). If 8mm is used then the length is 860 mm ( 33.5 in.) which is too long for a comfortable pull from fingers to eye. I will guess and say that the 7 mm width was used for a comfortable pull. Did you measure altitude by visually interpolating the 32' width ?
