After I posted this, I wondered why height of eye was not considered in this method? Since I shoot at a height of 100 feet (30 meters) or so, I would see the sunset a bit later than someone at sea level. This would skew the error in this example. I suppose in the emergency navigation you'd be in a lifeboat or other small craft, and the 1-2 meters of height of eye would not be accounted for, but my height could be a few seconds of time.
