The Times Literary Supplement of 12 Nov has an article that should be of
interest: "Longitude Forged: How an eighteenth-century hoax has taken in
Dava Sobel and other historians".

Ms. Sobel's status as an "historian" aside, the article describes one
Jeremy Thacker's 1714 pamphlet "The Longitudes Examin'd", cited by
several 19th and 20th century writers, but here exposed as a very
elaborate joke.
