     David,

    No need to wait untill noon to use the time sight.  If you think of the time sight as a N & S LOP then shoot the sun as late in the morning as your AH will let you and, using the intercept method, draw the LOP and see where it crosses the time sight N & S LOP.

    Better still, after the late morning sun shot, use the time sight formula twice but with two Latitudes about 30 minute arc appart ( your AP Lat in the middle ) and draw a Sumner line LOP.
