As I understand it, that is an optional setting on the listserv software that is chosen by the list owner. I am one of those whose replys often come off-list, and it is a pain. To avoid it, I always use the "reply all" function and delete the original sender from the resulting "To:" window.
When I get these apparently accidental off-list replies, I respond with an almost-automatic reply, thus:
You replied to my posting directly to me. If you intended it to go to the list, you must resend it.
Some listservers pass through the "reply to" field without offering you the choice of the "from"or the "reply to" address when you start a reply. I usually hit "reply all" and delete whichever "To:" address I don't want to avoid this problem.
I send this canned message whenever I receive an off-list reply to a list post, because I can't tell the intent. I don't want to forward them to the list myself because the sender might have meant it to be private.

Pardon a brief list mechanics question:
There's a slightly annoying "quirk" with this mailing list, and I'm wondering if anyone knows how to fix it. Most messsages to the list arrive with the "reply-to" address set to the list address, which is the way it should be. That way when you compose a reply, it becomes part of the conversation rather than just advice for one individual. But for a small number of list members, such as Jim
