Where are you located? Probably the easiest thing to do is to take two shots around celestial twilight (after sunset when the horizon is still visible). Then, there are plenty of stars, in Boston, we have Arcturus setting, Dubhe, Schedar, Fomalhaut, Capella rising, Alpheratz, Vega, Deneb and Altair at the time of nautical twilight.
