12 LED's, typically 40mA each. That would draw 0.48 Amps, so it could be a single chip current regulator. If it was just a resistor, the brightness would still vary somewhat with the voltage. A resistor handling 1/2 amp at 14.4V would probably need to be rated for 10 watts (unless I've mixed up my math as usual) and that would probably be a cement-colored "box" maybe 1/4" x 1/4" x 3/4" long, or somewhat larger, one wire coming out each end. The regulator probably is smaller and cheaper, too. What are the LED's, stacked 2 or 3 high and 4 or 6 across?
