Doug, Please don't get me wrong, I had no intention of being cynical or offending. I meant that your statements about what actions you take at what distances are illuminating. They contribute to my understanding of what it is like for the other guy. I have had the education of a deck officer on small merchant vessels, including radar certificate, full radio licence, and pre-sea training, but I have very limited experience on anything bigger than 50m (one prolonged summer inside the polar circle, not much darkness). I 'know' ARPA but have never worked with it. In nautical matters I consider myself not a professional; at most a semi-professional amateur. Thanks again for all your views and information, including what you got out of the docks the other night. Stabilized 10x binoculars, phew... not many OOW's will have those in their hands. Steven.
