The following newsletter contains a story about the celestial nav
methods used in the Lewis & Clark expedition. (It's pretty deep inside
    the document.)

Franz Hassler is mentioned in the story. He was America's first geodetic
surveyor. Hassler died the death of a real surveying man in 1843, after
sustaining an injury while attempting to protect some instruments during
    a storm.
