    Thanks to Ken Muldrew for reminding us that many of us thought hard about
    this problem, some years ago now. I would say that the upshot of it was
    that it reamained just as much of a mystery, what Lewis and Clark were
    measuring (or thought they were measuring), as it was when we started.
    
    I presented it as a problem in the days when I was starting to put together
    that Lewis and Clark website, long before that website actually appeared,
    so it's presented in slightly different terms, and without any sort of
    plot. Even so, I think the basic information, presented then, was the same
    as is in the website now.
    
    It will be good to see if Antoine can get anywhere, with a fresh pair of
    eyes. In case it's useful, my original request (and a bit of a challenge)
    was presented in this posting-

    If Antoine feels like following that up, he will find rather a lot of
    responses, and much deep thought, but (as I recall) no convincing
