    Yes, I use this method on occasion.  It works quite well.

    Speaking of looking at your watch,  I used to (when I was first practicing
    with my sextant) leave a small short-wave radio tuned to WWV, and then as
    the time was approaching the minute try to bring the sun into the correct
    position.   Then all you have to do is remember which damn minute it was...
    
    Anyone else do this?  You can get a Grundig yachtboy for about $40, less
    than the cost of a good watch.
