Being that I have no background in teaching, I will not dispute the virtues of the syllabus that you outline.
Having said that, the following comes to mind.
1. Notwithstanding GPS, learning what you dismiss might well turn out to be an interesting intellectual exercise, notwithstanding the fact that GPS units, I too have one, have been known to fail, no?
2, As to Brian's students, who knows but that some of them might become ships officers, to whom old fashioned CN might well be a requirement for licensing.
3, Seems that the range of possibilitiesa is wide.
