Greg:
If you look at the instruction manual for your DSLR, you'll probably discover that raw images take far more bits to store than if your camera converts them on-the-fly to JPEGs. That's because the JPEG algorithm reduces that amount of data that needs to be stored by (in layman's terms) saying "this pixel is very like the one next to it, so I'll just store the differences" -- with said differences typically requiring many fewer bits than repeating the entire new pixel.
So I'd not worry about Irfan doing the same thing.
The one thing that I do not know about Irfan (because I've never felt the need to do it) is whether one can input a raw image and store it that way.

Frank,I tried the raw zip on the Irfanview 4.35 and it changed my total pixels from 10mp to 4mp. How strange is that ?PhotoScape looks to be ok but suffers the same raw problem as irfanview :( there is a way to adjust exposure which puts it at the top of the free list for now.I'm getting quite a laptop workout installing and uninstalling various softwares and zips ;-)Greg RudzinskiRe: Laptop Freeware for DSLR Images

Yeah, I agree with Bill: HDR is easy these days. I have an HDR camera app on my phone and use it often. It acquires its images in less than one second, and the results can be interesting. It's a free app, so very basic. There are many new cameras that now include this capability standard.By the way, as far as Irfanview and camera RAW image files, I'm fairly sure it does support them. Google something like "Irfanview raw". You may need to download a plugin. Via plugins, this product covers nearly every imaginable image format, at least for reading.-FER----------------------------------------------------------------
