Something that was interesting at the time is that the Moorings had a
"chase" ultra light airplane on floats to come to the assistance of
boats that had mechanical problems. Normally yacht rental agencies have
"chase" boats to bring out a mechanic when needed and that was the only
time when I saw an airplane used for that purpose. I have chartered
with the Moorings on Raiatea again in 1991, 2000 and again in 2005 and
they no longer had the airplane.
For those planning to sail to Bora Bora I have some bad news for you, it has been ruined. When I first went there in 1990 it was a quiet backwater kind of a place with little tourist traffic and friendly people. The economic boom of the '90s brought many new hotels to Bora Bora then cruise ships starting calling which has changed the entire feeling of the island which now has the typical "cruise ship economy." For example, Bloody Mary's won't open its kitchen for for the occasional cruiser, it will only open if there is a cruise ship in harbor. Go there, of course, to see the beautiful island but then spend your time on Tahaa, or even better, on Huahine which are still (as of 2005) peaceful backwaters.
Attached is a Google Earth place mark for my anchorage in the eastern fjord at Tahaa.
