Re: LAN Example for ON Nov/Dec Issue
    From: Stan K
    Date: 2016 Dec 22, 15:17 -0500
With every issue of ON I go over the Berson problem with a 100-year-old friend who still does these problems.  Every issue I find something I don't like about Berson's solution, and I have given up on sending ON emails, as they have never responded.  I usually do the problems manually and with Celestial Tools.  Here is a summary of what I told him:

Neither Celestial Tools nor a manual reduction agreed with Berson's latitude, 49º55.8'S.  There was the common 0.1' difference between the Celestial Tools value and the Nautical Almanac value of the Main correction (Celestial Tools showing 15.6' where the Almanac shows 15.5').  After "adjustment", both get a latitude of 49º55.0'S.  I have included a copy of the manual reduction, with the Celestial Tools differences in the margins.

I think the reason that ON does not show a complete solution is that then we would know exactly what was done incorrectly.  Now we have to guess where the error is.

Did the captain nail LAN ? I think about two fingers of rum correction was left in the bottle  ;-)
The reader will have to assume year 2016 and Sun lower limb for the example. Quite a wild yarn. It is hard to believe there were only 2 out of 22 able to navigate this clipper.
