Caveat Emptor: For lack of the correct technical description, the lines
which make up the characters displayed in the Datascope fade and disappear
over time. KVH warranty/support is poor in this case. My unit was only a
few years old and it's now useless because the characters are
unrecognizable. That's a lot of money for something that ends up as a
    monocular.

I originally bought a Datascope with plans to use it on a sextant, but, like
Doug, I found the optics not up to the job.

It is, however, a very useful hand-bearing compass, and I've found its
ability to store bearings makes for quick visual fixes.

The rangefinder is a little too crude for accurately determining distances
for navigation, but I've used it a lot for determing changing ranges in
    racing.

    It is pretty durable.
